Abiding in Christ: What It Means to Dwell, Linger, and Wait
Abide in His Love
We are not meant to live disconnected, but with a steady awareness of being joined to the Lord.
Welcome, it’s tea time in God’s Word. Let’s pause together, settle into stillness, and allow His truth to do its quiet, faithful work in us. ☕️ 📖
John 15 clearly illustrates the idea of abiding in Jesus, using a simple, natural picture that is easy to understand. He is the vine, and we are the branches. From Him, we receive our spiritual life, nourishment, and strength. We are not meant to live disconnected, but with a steady awareness of being joined to Him.
Apart from Him, we wither.
Connected to Him, we flourish (John 15:5).
He is our life (John 14:6).
Because of this, abiding in Him is not only a beautiful truth—it is something we live out in practical ways. Reading my Bible daily, obeying the Lord, and being part of a church fellowship are all meaningful ways to stay connected to Him. These rhythms support a life of abiding.
Yet, as I lingered a little longer during my quiet time one morning, I felt drawn to look deeper into the word “abide.” Its meaning opened something more for me. I found words like: to sojourn, to dwell, to wait, to linger, to tarry, and to remain.
Three of these especially stayed with me: to dwell, to linger, and to wait.
They feel inviting—peaceful and full of promise. They carry a quiet sense of acceptance, as if the Lord is not rushing us, but welcoming us to stay.
As I reflected on my time with Him, I felt encouraged to practice this more intentionally.
We already know the Lord invites us to set aside time each day to dwell in His presence and in His Word. We may linger over Scripture for a few moments—reading slowly, thinking deeply, and speaking with Him in prayer.
But for me, the most stretching part this morning was this: to be still just a little longer… to wait expectantly for Him.
To wait for His voice.
To wait for a word for my heart.
It brought to mind Psalm 27:14:
Wait on the LORD;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on the LORD!
And so, I’ve come to understand that abiding in Christ is living in a close, continual relationship with Him—resting in His love, remaining in His Word, and depending on Him each day.
I will dwell, linger, and wait… trusting He is near, and that He will speak in His perfect timing.
Loving Father, help us today—even now—to be aware of Your presence in our lives. Teach us to wait just a little longer in our quiet time with You, that we may hear You speak to our hearts.
Amen
