When My Heart Drifts
Welcome, ☺️
I’m glad you’re here today. Praying you’ll be encouraged to fix your eyes on the Lord Jesus if you have drifted away.
Scripture Passage: Song of Solomon 5:2–16
“I sleep, but my heart is awake…”
I forget how easy it is to wander and drift away from the Lord.
I get caught up in the responsibilities, cares, and busyness of daily life, and before I realize it, the closeness I once enjoyed with my Lord has grown distant. Consumed with life, I don't even realize that I have left my Lord standing outside the door of my life.
Yet He gently awakens me:
“Open for me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one…”
Oh, how thankful I am that the Lord desires a close relationship with me!
He loves me. I am precious to Him. He knows my frailties, yet He sees me as perfect before Him.
“My beloved put his hand by the latch of the door…”
He gives me a glimpse of Himself, drawing my heart, my thoughts, and my eyes back to Him.
And then I hear my excuses:
“I have taken off my robe; how can I put it on again?”
Am I indifferent? Too lazy? Am I ready to make excuses for not drawing nearer to Him?
Do I not remember that my Savior has given His all to purchase me?
I opened the door, but…
“I opened for my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone away…”
The Lord desires to draw me out, closer to Himself, to follow and walk with Him. My heart is stirred, yet why do I often still resist?
In love, He would draw me out further.
Will I give up?
Will I try to find Him in the things of this world?
No.
“I sought him.”
“I called to him.”
A close relationship with the Lord Jesus cannot be found in the things of this world, in my own efforts, in family or friends, or even in religion.
I will follow after Him.
I will be quiet in His presence.
Then comes the question:
“What is your beloved more than another beloved, O fairest among women?”
What makes Jesus different? Why is He worthy of my whole heart?
The answer is found as I turn my eyes toward Him.
“Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.” — Philippians 3:8
I choose to set aside time each day to read His Word and talk with Him.
And then I discover something: the more I am occupied with the Lord of glory, the more the things of this world fade away.
His Word draws my thoughts to the details of Who He is—His character, the work He has done to save me, His perfections, His beauties.
When my Lord is again my all in all, the focus of my heart and eyes, I find that the things of this world—the trials, cares, and burdens—fade into the background.
My eyes are lifted to Him.
My heart is drawn back to Him.
And I find myself saying with the bride in the Song of Solomon:
“Yes, He is altogether lovely.
This is my beloved, and this is my friend.”
A Quiet Prayer
Oh, Lord Jesus, keep my heart awake to You. Let me not become so occupied with the things around me that I fail to notice when I have drifted from Your presence.
Draw me back to Your Word.
Draw me back to stillness.
Draw my heart back to You.
Amen.
