The Treasure Worth Seeking

Diamond ring

Welcome, 🙂

Come, let’s open the Word together.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

“You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13

I lost the diamond from my engagement ring.

I had just noticed it while drying my hands after doing the dishes. My heart dropped. Even though the dishwater had already drained, I searched carefully in the sink. It wasn't there.

Panic began to rise. I hoped it hadn't gone down the drain. Maybe it had fallen out while I was making dinner. I searched the counters, the stovetop, the refrigerator, and the floor. Then I grabbed a flashlight, got down on my hands and knees, and shone the light across the floor. Suddenly, the beam caught a sparkle. I crawled over and found my diamond.

What joy and thankfulness filled my heart!

As I reflected on that experience, I was reminded of the two verses above. What treasures fill my thoughts throughout the day? What often occupies our minds reveals what fills our hearts.

What—or who—is your treasure?

Am I seeking prestige in my work? A better job? More money? More possessions? The approval of others? A relationship? Comfort? Security? Whatever fills my thoughts most often may reveal what I treasure most.

What we treasure captures our thoughts. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6 that our hearts follow what we value most. If earthly cares consume us, our minds naturally drift downward. But when Christ becomes our greatest treasure, our thoughts begin to return to Him. We find ourselves looking up.

God desires to be sought. He willingly reveals Himself to those who seek Him with sincere hearts. James 4:8 reminds us, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." Jesus Christ desires a relationship with us.

For our good, Scripture says, "Set your mind on things above..." (Colossians 3:2) and "Delight yourself also in the LORD..." (Psalm 37:4). These are action words—choices we are invited to make moment by moment.

A loving awareness of God is cultivated through prayer, Scripture, worship, and quiet surrender. Even brief moments throughout the day can gently turn our hearts back to Him. "Pray without ceasing." (1 Thessalonians 5:17) "In Your presence is fullness of joy." (Psalm 16:11)

The Lord is not asking for our occasional attention. Like my search for that lost diamond, He invites us to seek Him diligently with all our hearts. As we seek to know Him, we discover that He Himself is our greatest treasure—and in Him we find our deepest joy and our true resting place.

A Quiet Prayer

Lord, turn my heart toward You throughout this day. Help me treasure Your presence above the distractions of this world. Let my thoughts return to You often because You are the delight of my life. Amen.

Steeped in God’s love, 🌸

Evelyn
