Lost In Wonder
“I see the work of Your hands,
Galaxies spin in a heavenly dance…
I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by You.”
— “Overwhelmed,” Big Daddy Weave
Welcome, ☺️
Pour a cup of tea, quiet your heart, and join me for a few moments. I’m glad you are here.
As we sang these words in singsperation this morning, my heart was deeply touched.
The word overwhelmed is usually used to describe a life filled with struggles—too much to do, too many burdens to carry, and not enough time to do it all. It speaks of anxious minds and weary hearts.
But this song uses the word in an entirely different way.
It speaks of being overwhelmed by God.
Overwhelmed by His beauty.
Overwhelmed by His majesty.
Overwhelmed by His mercy.
I’m at camp this week, far away from any big city. At night, the sky feels so close you could almost reach out and touch the countless stars scattered across the heavens.
“I see the work of Your hands…”
How do you explain the feeling that rises in your heart as you look up? The vastness of creation reminds us that the God who spoke every star into existence is beyond anything we can fully comprehend.
Sometimes, while we’re at camp, the rain begins quietly before suddenly giving way to thunder and lightning. The sky darkens. Thunder rolls across the hills. Lightning flashes all around us.
“If I hear the sound of Your voice…”
In those moments, I can’t help but think of the greatness of God. His voice is both gentle and powerful. He comforts the weary, yet He also commands the wind and the waves.
How can we fully explain the power of God revealed through His creation?
We can’t.
We simply stand in awe.
Overwhelmed.
And then my thoughts turn to the cross.
There we see the greatest display of God’s love the world has ever known. Jesus willingly took upon Himself the punishment for my sin so that I could be forgiven and made free.
“I know the power of Your cross…”
I could never have paid the debt of my sin. But in His great mercy, God sent His only Son.
How can that not overwhelm our hearts?
As I stood singing, surrounded by God’s creation, I found myself asking:
Am I still amazed by Him?
Am I awestruck by His holiness?
Am I captivated by His beauty?
Or have I become so familiar with His blessings that I’ve lost my wonder?
The Lord is altogether lovely. His beauty is beyond comparison. His mercy has no measure. His glory fills both heaven and earth.
May we never lose our sense of wonder.
May we be overwhelmed—not by the pressures of life—but by the beauty, majesty, and love of our God.
“Yes, He is altogether lovely.”
—Song of Solomon 5:16
A Quiet Prayer
Father, restore my sense of wonder. Open my eyes to see Your beauty in creation, Your power in Your Word, and Your love displayed at the cross. May I be overwhelmed—not by the burdens of this world, but by the greatness of who You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.
