What I Could Never Lose
Welcome,
The words of C. S. Lewis that follow caused me to reflect on a deeply personal lesson the Lord is graciously teaching me—one that continues to draw my heart more fully to Christ.
"Do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose."
— C. S. Lewis
So, so true... and such a hard lesson to learn.
When I first read those words, I paused. They revealed something in my heart I hadn't recognized before.
I didn't realize how much my happiness, smiles, and sense of well-being depended on people until the Lord allowed them to be taken from my life. Calling it a heartbreaking lesson is an understatement.
I loved the Lord with all my heart. I read His Word and actively served Him. Everything seemed right in my world. Wasn't that where joy was found?
Yet my loving Father wanted to reveal something hidden deep within my heart—something I could not see on my own. In His love, He was teaching me to see Christ, only Christ, as the unshakable source of my joy and contentment.
Could I survive the grief, the anger, the darkness, and the days that felt like despair?
At times, I couldn't function. I felt paralyzed in my thoughts and actions. I was stuck, and moving forward seemed impossible.
During those days, the Psalms became my own prayers.
"He drew me up from the pit of destruction..." (Psalm 40:2)
"I am so troubled that I cannot speak." (Psalm 77:4)
"I drench my couch with my tears." (Psalm 6:6)
"My heart is overwhelmed." (Psalm 61:2)
Then the Lord answered with His own words of comfort:
"Do not fear." (Lamentations 3:57)
Slowly and purposefully, He lifted me out of despondency and set my feet upon the Rock. His Word soothed my broken heart.
"You are precious in My sight... I love you."
"I have called you by name; you are Mine."
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you... when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned."(Isaiah 43:2)
Little by little, He lifted my eyes from what I had lost to the One I could never lose.
Why does He love me so?
I am precious to Him.
What amazing love—that He would patiently transform me into His image. Through fire and pressure, He walks beside me. He holds my right hand. (Psalm 16:8)
So I choose to rejoice.
I choose to take joy in the God of my salvation.
Day by day, I learn to rest quietly before Him. My expectation is from Him alone.
He knew what it would take for me to see Him more clearly. Everything in this world—even the sweetest gifts—must stay in their rightful place in my heart.
The Lord did not simply bring me through my grief—He transformed me in it. What I once thought would destroy me became the very place where I came to know Him more deeply. My circumstances did not define the ending of my story; His faithfulness did.
One day, every broken thing will be made right. Every tear will be wiped away, and we will see our Savior face to face. Until then, He continues His gracious work of restoring our hearts, shaping us into the image of Christ, and teaching us to find our deepest joy in Him. Whatever He allows, He remains my Rock, my strength, and my unfailing hope.
Looking back, I would never have chosen that path, but I would not trade what I came to know of Him along the way. I discovered what I could never lose—Christ Himself.
A Quiet Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are enough. Keep drawing my heart to Yours until You become my greatest joy. Amen.
